Writing a paper/conference proposal abstract

  1. Hanh Pham

What is a paper/ conference proposal abstract?

A paper/ conference proposal abstract differs from a research/thesis/dissertation abstract. It is a critical piece of writing for scholars, emphasizing a talk or description of the research they will conduct. Usually, it is a short paragraph (approximately 200-300 words long).

    Why is abstract so important?

    An abstract helps readers

    • grab the main ideas of your work and decide if they should read an entire article
    • decide if it meets the conference/workshop standards

What are the key elements in a proposal abstract?

Background: the context of the research you are going to explore, such as a topic widely discussed in your field or a gap in the literature (one or two sentences)

Purpose: the aim of the research: why do you want to conduct this research (one or two sentences)?

Methodology: What research design will you employ, and the methods/tools do you intend to use for the research?

Results: what you hope to accomplish with the project

Conclusion: what are the most important consequences of the work/your contribution to your field?
