Description

This dataset is the backbone of the Cultural Crosscurrents Catalogue of Printed Translations in Stuart and Commonwealth Britain 1641-1660 (CCC), developed at the Université de Montréal under the direction of Marie-Alice Belle and Brenda M. Hosington. (crosscurrentscatalogue.ca)

Gathered from the English Short Title Catalogue and the Early English Books Online database, this dataset offers bibliographical information for translations printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and New England, as well as translations into English printed on the Continent, for the years 1641-1660.

The data in the 'Main Table' (c.1730 entries) includes information on titles; printing date and location; source, mediating, and target languages; authors, translators, stationers, and booksellers; and descriptions of the material features of printed translations.

The table also offers biographical information for the translators who could be identified. The biographical details were gathered from the Renaissance Cultural Crossroads Catalogue, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and primary sources such as the records of the Stationers' Company of London.
