The call for Just Food Futures reflects a desire to address social inequities, health disparities, and environmental disasters created by overlapping systems of oppression including capitalism, white supremacy, and heteropatriarchy. While many food movement actors share a desire to meaningfully tackle these issues, the richness and broadness of the food movement does not come without problems. The challenge of engaging with the intersectional nature of food-based inequities is apparent in the tensions between distinctive food organizations and movements and their sometimes conflicting goals, approaches, tactics, and strategies. This Themed Section brings together some of the contributions to and reflections from a virtual three-day workshop held in May 2021 in which we aimed at better understanding the differing approaches, the spaces in which they work, and where we explored collaborative possibilities within, between, and beyond food movements. In this Introduction we share reflections from the guest editors. To explore how food movements can collaborate in solidarity while not negating differences, we first identify key frictions within and between food-related movements and why they persist. Second, we suggest three strategic orientations that may help to explore collaborative possibilities within, between, and beyond food movements: Learning from other movements, fostering political literacy, and engaging with tensions productively. Finally, we consider the role and responsibility of academics within these conversations. We close with a call for (re)politization across difference and relate this back to strategies for broader social transformations.

L’appel à Un avenir alimentaire juste reflète un désir de s’attaquer aux inégalités sociales, aux disparités en matière de santé et aux catastrophes environnementales créées par des systèmes d’oppression qui se chevauchent, notamment le capitalisme, la suprématie blanche et l’hétéropatriarcat. De nombreux acteurs du mouvement alimentaire veulent s’attaquer de manière significative à ces enjeux. Cependant, la richesse et l’étendue de ce mouvement ne sont pas sans problèmes. D’ailleurs, s’attaquer à la nature intersectionnelle des inégalités alimentaires représente tout un défi. En effet, il existe des tensions entre les différents mouvements et organisations liés à l’alimentation, car leurs objectifs, leurs approches, leurs tactiques et leurs stratégies sont parfois contradictoires. Cette section thématique rassemble certaines des contributions et des réflexions exposées lors d’un atelier virtuel de trois jours organisé en mai 2021. À cette occasion, nous avons cherché à mieux comprendre les différentes approches et les espaces dans lesquels elles opèrent. Nous avons également exploré les possibilités de collaboration à l’intérieur des mouvements alimentaires, entre eux et au-delà de ces derniers. Dans la présente introduction, nous partageons les idées des rédacteurs invités. Afin d’explorer la façon dont les mouvements alimentaires pourraient collaborer de manière solidaire, et sans nier leurs différences, nous commençons par identifier les frictions clés existant au sein des mouvements, ainsi que celles qui les opposent. Nous expliquons aussi pourquoi ces problèmes persistent. Ensuite, nous suggérons trois orientations stratégiques qui devraient aider à explorer les possibilités de collaboration énumérées plus haut: apprendre des autres mouvements, favoriser l’éducation politique et entamer un dialogue productif au sujet des tensions. Enfin, nous examinons le rôle et la responsabilité des universitaires dans ces conversations. Nous terminons par un appel à une (re)politisation allant au-delà des différences, que nous relions à des stratégies de transformations sociales plus larges.
